The Chase
by Nikita
Rating: PG-13

Disclaimer: The characters belong to the great and powerful Joss.
Author's Notes: I felt the need to write some fluff today, so here it is. Takes off from B and F's conversation in Beauty And The Beasts, using most of the dialogue from that scene. We're assuming Angel doesn't come back from hell, because I wanted to use this scene, but couldn't be assed writing him into the story. I hope this fic finds you and your loved ones all safe.

Buffy and Faith walked through the cemetery, Buffy looking out for vamps, Faith looking at Buffy. Subtly, of course. Faith grinned to herself, wouldn't want to freak the blonde out TOO much. It was quiet tonight, with the vamps of Sunnydale keeping a low profile now that the two slayers had teamed up. Faith dragged her eyes away from Buffy and scanned the area around them.

"Nice place." She commented, deciding the best way to steer the conversation towards her favourite subject. Fuck it, she thought to herself. Blunt was always her strong point. "Ever catch kids doing the dirty up here?"

The blonde raised an eyebrow at her. "No. There's a smootch spot up by the woods. That's where kids usually go." She replied, wondering if Faith ever thought about anything besides sex.

Faith smirked at her use of the word `smootch'. That was B, all right. Coy, innocent... my ass, Faith thought. "Bet you and Scott have been up there kicking the old gearshift." Faith continued, trying to find out how far they had gotten.

"Hardly. We've only been on a few dates." Buffy replied, wondering where this was going. It was always the same with Faith, seemingly innocent, friendly questions that inevitably led to...

"But you like him?" Faith cut her off, hoping for... something in her favour... "When you think about him, you get that good, down low tickle?"

... Questions that inevitably led to something like that, Buffy sighed. "Yeah, I guess." She replied, before stopping and noticing the grin on Faith's face. "How low?"

"You tell me." Faith smiled. Please, I'd really like to hear...

"How about not?" Buffy said. She didn't know this girl too well, and her constant sexual questioning freaked her out slightly. It was as if she was always trying to get her to talk about sex. But why would she do that? Unless- no, couldn't be. "But he's nice, and he's funny." Buffy added, hoping to reaffirm her sexuality.

"And quite a muffin." Faith sighed, wondering if she should push this or not.

"Blueberry." Buffy was saying enthusiastically. "With that crunchy munchy stuff on top." Yup, mmm. Buffy thought. Just what I like to eat. Don't like to eat girls. Nuh-huh. Not me. Especially not this fiery, wild, tight leather wearing... Stop it! Buffy decided to change the subject slightly. "But my most favourite thing so far is that he doesn't appear to be some kind of hellbeast." Definitely my favourite thing.

"All men are beasts, Buffy." Faith replied, sensing an opening in the conversation to drag it her way again.

Oh damn, I hope this isn't going where I think it's going, Buffy panicked. "OK. I was hoping to not get that cynical until I was at least 40."

"It's not cynical." Faith continued. Buffy raised an eyebrow at her again. "I mean, it's realistic." She said, explaining herself. "Every guy from `Manimal' to `Mr. I-loved-the-English-patient' has beast in him." Faith shook her head. "I don't care how sensitive they act, they're all just in it for the chase." She finished, looking at the ground.

Buffy watched her with interest. "OK..." She said. "I'll bite. Why do you think that?"

Faith shrugged and grinned at Buffy. "Experience, I guess."

"Then why do you keep going back?"

"Because it's easy. They take what they want, I take what I want. No strings, no problem." Yup, Faith thought to herself. Life was easy that way, it had gotten a hell of a lot more complicated as soon as she had laid eyes on the blonde. Buffy was the sort of girl who might make her stick around and face her fears, Faith shivered. Scary thought.

"And you're happy that way?" Buffy asked disbelievingly. "Don't you ever want to take a chance on someone?"

"Most people aren't worth the effort." The brunette shrugged.

"Most people?" Why am I asking this? Buffy thought, I know where this is going. Not stupid.

Faith stopped and turned to her, her mind tying itself in knots over what to do. "Yeah... most people. There's only one person that's worth it.... but they're not interested." She started walking again and Buffy had to jog a few steps to catch up with her.

"How do you know?" She was pretty sure Faith had a thing for her, and she was becoming more and more curious. Not that she was interested. No way.

"Not dumb, B." Faith smirked. "I just know."

"You can't know." Buffy whined.

Faith stopped and looked at her. Worth the effort? Yeah, but the risk was so high. Buffy stared back at the brunette with interest. She was so carefree most of the time, but now she looked... nervous. Buffy had felt herself drawn to Faith since they had first met, but there was the whole Scott thing, and Faith was a girl, and a bad girl at that. She had sworn off badasses since Angel, and Faith would really complicate her life. But she liked her. A lot. And her curiosity had definitely been aroused.

"Maybe you should tell her." She said.

Faith's eyes snapped to her own. "Uh.. them, him, uhhh..." Buffy stammered.

They stopped walking and stared at each other for a second, Buffy opening and closing her mouth like a fish.

"Are you... I mean.... am I wrong?"

"I like guys, B." Faith said, pausing for a second. Fuck it! "And girls."

Buffy grinned. "Thought so."

Faith kicked at the dirt. "Yeah? It's OK?"

Buffy nodded enthusiastically again. "Yes!"

But how OK? Not as much as I'd like. "Well now that's that-" Faith said, starting to walk again.

Buffy ran in front of her. "Tell me who you like."

"No."

"Please?"

"No."

"Pleeeaaaassseee?"

"No."

"I'll tell everyone you like Cordelia." Buffy grinned.

"You wouldn't?!" Faith gasped. When Buffy giggled and nodded her head, Faith sighed. "Fine."

"Well?"

Faith took a deep breath and noticed that her shoes had suddenly become extremely interesting. "I like you, B."

Buffy smiled, and put her hand on Faith's cheek. "Look at me?"

Faith did as she was told. "It's OK, y'know, if-"

Buffy put a finger on her lips. "I've never... girl..."

"I know."

"But I like you." Buffy said. "A lot."

Faith's eyes lit up and Buffy just about fell flat on her face in love right then.

"Can I kiss you?" Faith asked quietly. Buffy nodded, and Faith leaned in slowly, brushing her lips against the blonde's. Buffy felt sparks of electricity shoot up her spine, and she moaned, opening her mouth to Faith. An invitation which Faith quickly accepted.

When they pulled apart, Buffy was grinning. "I liked that."

"A lot?"

"A very lot."

Faith grinned back. "So... is Scott taking you to Homecoming?"

"Why? Do you have other plans?" Buffy smiled innocently, waiting for a proper invitation.

Faith rolled her eyes. "Fine. Will you go with me, B- Buffy?" She asked, catching herself.

Buffy put her arms around her. "Only if you vote for me." She said, kissing her again.
